Grandma’s 4-Ingredient Oven-Baked Chicken Royale

 Grandma’s 4-Ingredient Oven-Baked Chicken Royale

The vintage chicken casserole that disappeared first at every church potluck!

My aunt clipped this simple recipe from a 1967 magazine, and it became one of those family dishes nobody ever got tired of. She made it for church potlucks, Sunday suppers, funeral lunches, and family gatherings—and somehow, that baking dish always came home empty.

With just 4 simple ingredients, this old-fashioned Chicken Royale turns into a creamy, savory, wonderfully tender dinner that tastes like pure comfort.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 packet (1 oz) dry onion soup mix

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the chicken breasts in a single layer in the prepared dish. If the breasts are very thick, gently pound them to an even thickness so they cook evenly.
  3. Make the sauce: In a bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, and dry onion soup mix. Stir until smooth and well blended.
  4. Pour the creamy mixture evenly over the chicken, making sure each piece is generously coated.
  5. Cover tightly with foil and bake for about 40–45 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  6. Uncover and bake for another 5–10 minutes to let the sauce thicken slightly and the top become lightly golden.
  7. Rest for 5 minutes before serving. Spoon plenty of the creamy onion sauce over each piece of chicken.

Serving Ideas

Serve this cozy chicken with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, rice, green beans, or warm dinner rolls. The sauce is too good to leave behind!

A Little Taste of the Past

Some recipes are more than just dinner—they’re memories. This one is the kind of humble, dependable dish that reminds you of crowded church halls, folding tables, handwritten recipe cards, and somebody’s aunt insisting, “Take another piece. There’s plenty!”

Four ingredients. One baking dish. Decades of memories. And never a single serving left over.
