Creamy 4-Ingredient Cabbage & Potato Gratin
My dear sister first introduced this cozy casserole to our holiday table years ago, and it quickly became one of those comforting recipes everyone asked for again. It’s incredibly simple, made with just four main ingredients, yet the result is creamy, tender, golden, and absolutely delicious!
Ingredients
1 medium head green cabbage, thinly sliced
4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
2 cups heavy cream
1½ cups shredded Gruyère, Swiss, or mozzarella cheese
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Optional: a pinch of garlic powder and fresh thyme
Instructions
1. PREPARE THE OVEN
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. LAYER THE VEGETABLES
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer. Season lightly with salt and pepper, then add half of the cabbage. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cabbage.
3. ADD THE CREAM
Pour the heavy cream evenly over the vegetables. Gently press everything down so the cream can work its way between the layers.
4. TOP WITH CHEESE
Sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the top. Add a little garlic powder or thyme if desired.
5. BAKE UNTIL GOLDEN
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25–30 minutes, or until the potatoes are completely tender and the top is beautifully golden and bubbling.
6. REST & SERVE
Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving. This gives the creamy sauce time to settle and makes every spoonful wonderfully rich and comforting.
Tip: For an extra-crispy, golden top, place the gratin under the broiler for 2–3 minutes at the end—watch it closely!
